About Wobbles

Wobbles is a true, multi-perspective memoir chronicling the remarkable journey of Mark Wilson, who was born with cerebral palsy after a birth injury left him severely asphyxiated. From his earliest days, every movement, every milestone was a battle. But Wobbles isn’t just Mark’s story—it’s also the story of his family’s fierce commitment to his potential, and the therapist who challenged all of them to keep striving. Told through five intertwined voices—Mark; his mother, Shirley; his father, Glenn; his sister, Corena; and his therapist, Ian—the book paints a raw, intimate portrait of a family fighting for a future others said was impossible. Their home became a place of therapy marathons, endless repetition, tears, laughter, and moments of stubborn defiance. Readers follow Mark from his rocky beginning, when the prognosis offered little hope, through years of therapy that tested everyone’s patience and resolve, to a life of achievements many thought unattainable—including graduating in the top 15% of his university. Along the way, Wobbles explores what it takes to keep going when progress is painfully slow and setbacks feel crushing. Some moments from the book capture the honest, sometimes darkly humorous reality of their experience: The word hate is a strong word, but that’s exactly what my young self felt toward Ian. — Mark It felt like he had just delivered a death sentence. — Shirley Channelling John Wayne riding off into the sunset, I soon had the pony under control. — Mark Whoever came up with the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” had surely never been bullied.– Mark The volunteers became our true friends, a group of strangers who were there for us in our time of need.– Glenn My next tactic was to become the daughter from hell. Someone you would prefer to leave at home. Corena Was I expecting too much of Mark, once again running and potentially ruining his life?– Shirley For the first time in my life, I’d done everything by myself.– Mark Through these voices, Wobbles invites readers into the raw emotion of the daily struggles and quiet triumphs that come from refusing to give up. It’s not a story of miracles, but of dogged persistence—of a family and therapist learning, failing, adapting, and growing together. At its heart, Wobbles is a book about hope, love, and the extraordinary power of determination. It challenges how we see disability, therapy, and resilience, offering a moving testament to what can happen when people decide to fight for a different future.
